Purpose[edit | edit source]

ABR focuses only on the function of the inner ear, the acoustic (hearing) nerve, and part of the brain pathways that are associated with hearing.

How ABR test is performed?[edit | edit source]

  • Electrodes are placed on the head and certain tones or clicking sounds are made.
  • The electrodes measure nerve signals in the brain when it reacts to the sounds.
  • Because this test does not rely on a person’s response behavior, the person being tested can be sound asleep during the test.

Other names[edit | edit source]

Also called auditory brain stem response test, BAER test, and brain stem auditory evoked response test.
