The tree is notable for its large, spherical fruits and its striking, fragrant flowers.

Description[edit | edit source]

Couroupita guianensis is a large, deciduous tree that can grow up to 35 meters in height. The trunk is straight and cylindrical, with a rough, grayish-brown bark. The leaves are simple, alternate, and oblong, measuring up to 30 cm in length. The tree is particularly known for its unique flowers and fruits.

Flowers[edit | edit source]

The flowers of Couroupita guianensis are large, measuring up to 10 cm in diameter, and are borne on long, thick stalks that emerge directly from the trunk. They are typically pink or red with a yellow center and have a strong, sweet fragrance. The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects.

The fruits of Couroupita guianensis are large, spherical, and woody, resembling cannonballs, hence the common name. They can measure up to 25 cm in diameter and contain numerous seeds embedded in a pulp. The fruits take about a year to mature and fall to the ground when ripe.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Couroupita guianensis thrives in tropical climates with high humidity and well-drained soils. It is commonly found in rainforests, along riverbanks, and in other moist, lowland areas. The tree is also cultivated in botanical gardens and as an ornamental plant in tropical regions around the world.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The tree has various uses, both practical and cultural. The wood is sometimes used for construction and making tools. The flowers and fruits are used in traditional medicine and religious ceremonies in some cultures. The tree is also valued for its ornamental qualities and is often planted in parks and gardens.
