Diagnostic Errors

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

An error in the proper and timely diagnosis of a patient.

Definition[edit | edit source]

It is defined as the failure to make a correct and timely explanation of a patient’s health problem, regardless of whether or not there is harm, or to communicate that diagnosis to the patient.

Consequences[edit | edit source]

Thousands of patients die every year due to diagnostic errors.

Causes[edit | edit source]

While clinicians' cognitive biases play a role in many diagnostic errors, underlying health care system problems also contribute to missed and delayed diagnoses.
