(fo-men-ta' -shun) [fomentare, to foment]. 1. The application of heat and moisture to a part to relieve pain or reduce inflammation. It may be made by means of cloths soaked in hot water or medicated solution or by a poultice. 2. The substance applied to a part to convey heat or mois- ture.
