Law Day is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law in the United States. It is observed annually on May 1. Law Day underscores how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. It also provides an opportunity to recognize the role of courts in a constitutional democracy and the importance of jury service in maintaining the rule of law.

History[edit | edit source]

Law Day was first established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to mark the nation's commitment to the rule of law. The idea was proposed by Charles S. Rhyne, then president of the American Bar Association (ABA). In 1961, Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for Law Day.

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The purpose of Law Day is to:

  • Educate the public about the role of law in society.
  • Promote the importance of the legal process in maintaining a free society.
  • Encourage the observance and understanding of the law.

Observance[edit | edit source]

Law Day is observed with various activities across the country, including:

Themes[edit | edit source]

Each year, the ABA selects a theme for Law Day to focus on a particular aspect of the law or legal system. Past themes have included topics such as "Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society," "Separation of Powers," and "The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy."

Significance[edit | edit source]

Law Day serves as a reminder of the importance of the legal system in protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals. It highlights the role of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals in upholding justice and the rule of law.
