PGRMC1

PGRMC1 (Progesterone Receptor Membrane Component 1) is a protein encoded by the PGRMC1 gene in humans. It is a member of the membrane-associated progesterone receptor family and is involved in various cellular processes, including steroid hormone signaling, cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis.
Structure[edit | edit source]
PGRMC1 is a single-pass transmembrane protein that contains a cytochrome b5-like heme/steroid-binding domain. This domain is crucial for its interaction with various ligands and other proteins. The protein is approximately 195 amino acids in length and has a molecular weight of about 21 kDa.

PGRMC1 is involved in several key biological processes:
- Steroid Hormone Signaling: PGRMC1 binds to progesterone and other steroids, modulating their effects on target cells. It is thought to mediate non-genomic actions of progesterone, influencing cellular responses rapidly.
- Cell Cycle Regulation: PGRMC1 plays a role in the regulation of the cell cycle, particularly in the transition from the G1 to S phase. It is involved in the proliferation of certain cell types, including cancer cells.
- Apoptosis: PGRMC1 has been implicated in the regulation of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. It can either promote or inhibit apoptosis depending on the cellular context and the presence of other signaling molecules.
