Sarcocephalus
(sar-ko-sef'-al-us) [sarco-; «£<£- clXtj, head]. A genus of the Rubiacece. S. escu- lentus, a shrub of western Africa, the Guinea or Sierra Leone peach, yields an astringent antipyretic bark, doundaki or doundake (q. v.) ; it is the quinquina africane or kina du Rio Nunez of the French. The wood, called nijmo, is tonic and astringent. It contains the alkaloid doundakin.
