Shimon Peres (2 August 1923 – 28 September 2016) was an Israeli statesman who served as both the President of Israel and the Prime Minister of Israel during his long political career. He was a key figure in the founding of the State of Israel and played a significant role in its development over the decades.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Shimon Peres was born Szymon Perski in Wiszniew, Poland (now Vishnyeva, Belarus) to a Jewish family. In 1934, his family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine, where he attended the Geula Gymnasium in Tel Aviv. He later studied at the Ben Shemen Agricultural School and the David Yellin College of Education.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Peres began his political career in the 1940s, joining the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary organization. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a close associate of David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first Prime Minister.

Prime Minister[edit | edit source]

Peres served as Prime Minister of Israel twice, first from 1984 to 1986 and again from 1995 to 1996. During his first term, he implemented economic reforms that helped stabilize the Israeli economy.

President of Israel[edit | edit source]

In 2007, Peres was elected as the ninth President of Israel, a position he held until 2014. As President, he focused on promoting peace and innovation.

Peace Efforts and Nobel Prize[edit | edit source]
