The Hip Bone

The Hip Bone

The hip bone, also known as the coxal bone, is a large, flat bone that forms part of the pelvis. It is one of the two bones that make up the pelvis, the other being the sacrum. The hip bone is made up of three parts: the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis, which are fused together in adults.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The hip bone is made up of three parts: the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis. These three parts are distinct in children, but fuse together to form a single bone in adults.

Ilium[edit | edit source]

The ilium is the largest part of the hip bone. It forms the upper part of the hip bone and contributes to the formation of the acetabulum, the socket of the hip joint where the head of the femur (thigh bone) fits.

Ischium[edit | edit source]

The ischium forms the lower and back part of the hip bone. It is situated below the ilium and behind the pubis. The ischium is stronger and thicker than the ilium, and it is the part of the hip bone that bears the weight of the body when sitting.

Pubis[edit | edit source]

The pubis forms the front part of the hip bone. It is the smallest of the three parts and is located in front of the ischium. The pubis contributes to the formation of the acetabulum and also forms part of the pubic symphysis, the joint between the two hip bones.

Function[edit | edit source]

The hip bone plays a crucial role in supporting the weight of the body, both when standing and when walking. It also provides attachment points for many muscles, including those of the lower limb and the abdominal wall.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Diseases and conditions that can affect the hip bone include hip fractures, hip dysplasia, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Hip fractures are particularly common in older people, often as a result of a fall.
