- U nonimmigrant status for victims of criminal activity designated in INA (qualifying crimes) who have suffered substantial mental or physical abuse as a result of being a victim of criminal activity, possess information concerning the crime, and are being helpful to law enforcement and government officials in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal activity allows victims to remain in the United States for up to four years (or longer if a limited exception applies), receive work authorization, and, if certain conditions are met, apply for adjustment of status to that of a lawful permanent resident (LPR).
