The University Orthopaedic Center is a full-service specialty center located in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is affiliated with the University of Utah and is part of the University of Utah Health Care system. The center offers a wide range of orthopaedic services, including joint reconstruction, sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, spinal disorders, hand, foot and ankle, trauma, musculoskeletal oncology, shoulder and elbow, and physical therapy.

History[edit | edit source]

The University Orthopaedic Center has a rich history dating back to 1957 when Dr. Sherman S. Coleman was appointed as the head of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. In 1969, Dr. Harold Dunn joined the division, bringing expertise in scoliosis, spine trauma, and total joint replacement. Over the years, the center has evolved and expanded its services to become a leading orthopaedic care provider in the region.

The center has undergone several relocations. In 1967, the County Hospital closed, and the University of Utah Health Sciences Center opened on the main campus. It later moved to a larger building in 1981. The most recent move occurred on October 4, 2004, when the new University Orthopaedic Center began operations at its current location.

Medical Campus[edit | edit source]

The University of Utah Health Sciences medical campus is home to various healthcare facilities, including the University Orthopaedic Center. Other notable institutions on the campus include the Intermountain Burn Unit, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Moran Eye Center, University Neuropsychiatric Institute, University of Utah Hospital, and Primary Children's Medical Center, the only children's hospital in Utah.

The University of Utah Health Care system, which includes University Hospitals & Clinics, relies on a network of over 1,100 board-certified physicians, 10 community clinics, and several specialty centers. These centers cater to specific medical needs, such as cardiovascular care, clinical neurosciences, and diabetes management.
