Woomera
Woomera is a town located in the Far North region of South Australia, approximately 446 kilometers north of Adelaide. It is situated within the Woomera Prohibited Area, a large military testing range. Established in 1947, Woomera was initially developed to support the Woomera Rocket Range, a joint British-Australian project for testing rockets and missiles.
History[edit | edit source]
The establishment of Woomera was part of a post-World War II effort to develop advanced weapons technology. The Woomera Rocket Range was one of the largest land-based testing ranges in the world, covering an area of approximately 122,000 square kilometers. The town of Woomera was built to house the personnel involved in the testing operations.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Woomera was a hub of activity, with numerous tests conducted, including the Blue Streak missile and Black Arrow satellite launch vehicle. The town's population peaked at around 7,000 during this period.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Woomera is located in a semi-arid region characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures. The surrounding landscape is dominated by red desert sands and sparse vegetation. The town itself is situated at an elevation of 169 meters above sea level.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Woomera has historically been tied to its role as a military testing site. In recent years, the town has diversified its economy to include tourism, with attractions such as the Woomera Heritage Centre and the Woomera National Aerospace and Missile Park.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2021 census, Woomera had a population of 146 people. The town's population has fluctuated over the years, largely in response to the level of activity at the Woomera Test Range.
Culture and Community[edit | edit source]
Woomera has a unique cultural heritage, shaped by its history as a military town. The community is small but close-knit, with a focus on preserving the town's historical significance. The Woomera Heritage Centre offers insights into the town's past and its role in space exploration and missile testing.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Woomera is accessible by road via the Stuart Highway, which connects it to Adelaide and other major centers. The town also has an airfield, the Woomera Aerodrome, which supports both military and civilian flights.
