Cannes is a city located on the French Riviera in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is a commune known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels, and its annual Cannes Film Festival.

Cannes was originally a small fishing village known as Canua. The area was first inhabited by the Ligures, an ancient people of the region. During the Roman Empire, the area became a part of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The town's name evolved over the centuries, and it became known as Cannes in the 10th century.

In the 19th century, Cannes began to attract wealthy visitors from England and other parts of Europe, transforming it into a popular resort town. The construction of the railway in the mid-19th century further boosted its popularity.
