Fetal scalp pH testing is a diagnostic procedure used in obstetrics to assess the acid-base status of a fetus during labor and delivery. This test is typically performed when there is evidence of fetal distress or when the fetal heart rate pattern suggests the fetus may not be getting enough oxygen (fetal hypoxia).

A normal fetal scalp blood pH is above 7.25. Values between 7.20 and 7.25 are considered borderline, and values below 7.20 indicate acidemia, which may suggest fetal distress due to hypoxia.
