HHV8

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

HHV8 or Human Herpesvirus 8 is a type of herpesvirus that is also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). This virus is known to cause Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of cancer that commonly affects individuals with HIV/AIDS and is also associated with two other types of rare diseases: primary effusion lymphoma and multicentric Castleman's disease.

Overview[edit | edit source]

HHV8 is a member of the Herpesviridae family, which includes other well-known viruses such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Like other herpesviruses, HHV8 has the ability to remain dormant in the body for a long period of time and reactivate under certain conditions.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

The exact mode of transmission of HHV8 is not fully understood. However, it is believed to be spread through saliva, sexual contact, organ transplantation, and possibly through blood transfusions.

Diseases Associated with HHV8[edit | edit source]

Kaposi's Sarcoma[edit | edit source]

Kaposi's sarcoma is a type of cancer that causes lesions in the skin, lymph nodes, and mucous membranes. It is most commonly seen in individuals with HIV/AIDS, but can also occur in those with a weakened immune system for other reasons.

Primary Effusion Lymphoma[edit | edit source]

Primary effusion lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is often associated with HHV8. It typically affects individuals with a severely weakened immune system, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

Multicentric Castleman's Disease[edit | edit source]

Multicentric Castleman's disease is a rare disorder characterized by an overgrowth of lymphoid tissue. It is often associated with HHV8 and can lead to serious complications, including life-threatening infections.

Prevention and Treatment[edit | edit source]

There is currently no vaccine to prevent HHV8 infection. Treatment for diseases associated with HHV8 typically involves managing the symptoms and complications of the disease, and may include antiviral medications, chemotherapy, and other therapies.
