The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country located in West Africa. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa and is surrounded by Senegal, with a short strip of its coastline bordered with the Atlantic Ocean at its western end.

Obesity in The Gambia[edit | edit source]

In 2016, The Gambia had an adult obesity rate of 10.3%, ranking it 138th globally. This is a significant health concern, as obesity is a risk factor for many non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Healthcare Facilities[edit | edit source]

The Gambia has several healthcare facilities that offer services for weight loss and obesity management. These include:

  • Lamin Health Centre: This facility offers a comprehensive weight management program that includes dietary counseling, physical activity guidance, and medical management of obesity-related conditions.
  • Bansang Hospital: Located in the Central River Region, this hospital has a dedicated department for nutrition and dietetics that provides services for overweight and obese patients.
  • Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital: As the main referral hospital in the country, it offers a wide range of services, including weight management and obesity treatment.
