Patent urachus

Patent Urachus is a rare congenital condition in which a normally occurring channel in the early stages of fetal development, the urachus, fails to close. This results in a connection between the bladder and the umbilicus that remains open.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of a patent urachus is the discharge of urine from the umbilicus. Other symptoms can include abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, and visible abnormalities of the umbilicus.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a patent urachus is typically made through physical examination and imaging studies. Ultrasound is often the first imaging study used, but other modalities such as CT scan or MRI may also be used.

Treatment

Treatment for a patent urachus typically involves surgical removal of the urachal remnant. This can often be performed laparoscopically.

Prognosis

The prognosis for individuals with a patent urachus is generally good, particularly if the condition is identified and treated early. However, there is a small risk of complications, including infection and the development of urachal cancer.
