SLC17A3
SLC17A3 is a gene that in humans encodes a protein known as sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 4. This protein is a member of the solute carrier family 17. The SLC17A3 gene is located on the long (q) arm of chromosome 6 at position 16.3.
Function[edit | edit source]
The SLC17A3 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is found in the kidneys. This protein, known as sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 4, plays a crucial role in the reabsorption of phosphate in the kidneys. It helps to control the amount of phosphate that is excreted in the urine.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the SLC17A3 gene have been associated with hyperuricemia and gout. Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by high levels of uric acid in the blood, which can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, causing gout.
