Taco Bell was founded by Glen Bell, who first opened a hot dog stand called Bell's Drive-In in San Bernardino, California in 1948. In 1951, he opened a second stand, which he named Taco-Tia, where he began selling tacos. The first official Taco Bell restaurant opened in Downey, California, in 1962.

In 1978, Glen Bell sold Taco Bell to PepsiCo, which later spun off its restaurant division as Tricon Global Restaurants, now known as Yum! Brands.
