Tolmetin sodium

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Tolmetin Sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat pain and inflammation caused by conditions such as arthritis. It works by reducing the levels of prostaglandins, chemicals that are responsible for pain, fever, and inflammation. Tolmetin Sodium is available under the brand name Tolectin.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Tolmetin Sodium belongs to the class of drugs known as NSAIDs. These drugs work by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. By reducing the levels of these chemicals, NSAIDs can help to alleviate symptoms such as pain and inflammation.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Tolmetin Sodium is primarily used to treat symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, including pain, swelling, and stiffness. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all NSAIDs, Tolmetin Sodium can cause side effects. These may include stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness. More serious side effects can include stomach or intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, or heart attack. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or slurred speech.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Tolmetin Sodium can interact with other medications, including blood thinners, other NSAIDs, and certain types of antidepressants. Patients should always inform their healthcare provider of any other medications they are taking before starting treatment with Tolmetin Sodium.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before taking Tolmetin Sodium, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of heart disease, stroke, stomach or intestinal problems, or kidney disease. This medication should not be used during the last trimester of pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby.
