Hepatitis A and B vaccine
(Redirected from Ambirix)
A vaccine for the prevention of hepatitis A and B infections
The Hepatitis A and B vaccine is a combination vaccine that provides protection against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B infections. This vaccine is commonly known by the brand name Twinrix, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Hepatitis A and B are viral infections that affect the liver. Hepatitis A is typically spread through ingestion of contaminated food or water, while hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infectious body fluids. Both infections can lead to serious liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Vaccine Composition[edit | edit source]
The hepatitis A and B vaccine contains inactivated hepatitis A virus and recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen. The combination of these two components allows for simultaneous immunization against both viruses.
Administration[edit | edit source]
The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection. The standard schedule for adults involves three doses, with the second dose given one month after the first, and the third dose six months after the first. An accelerated schedule is also available for those who require rapid protection.
Efficacy[edit | edit source]
The hepatitis A and B vaccine is highly effective in preventing infections. Immunity to hepatitis A is typically achieved after the first dose, while full immunity to hepatitis B is achieved after the complete series of vaccinations.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of the vaccine include soreness at the injection site, headache, and fatigue. Serious side effects are rare.
Public Health Impact[edit | edit source]
The widespread use of the hepatitis A and B vaccine has significantly reduced the incidence of these infections in many parts of the world. Vaccination is especially important for travelers to areas where hepatitis A and B are endemic, healthcare workers, and individuals with chronic liver disease.
