Help:Page histories
From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia
Help:Page histories is a feature available on MediaWiki-based websites, including Wikipedia, that allows users to view all previous versions of a page, including who made each change and when. This feature is essential for tracking the evolution of a page and for identifying and reverting vandalism or other inappropriate edits.
Overview
A page's history is accessed by clicking the "View history" tab at the top of the page. This brings up a list of all past versions of the page, each identified by the date and time of the edit, the username or IP address of the editor, and the edit summary provided by the editor.
Each line in the page history has several links:
- (cur) and (prev): These links show the difference between that version and the current version or the previous version, respectively.
- Date and time: This link brings up the version of the page as it existed at that time.
- User name or IP address: This link leads to the user's contributions page or the contribution list for that IP address.
- Edit summary: This is a brief description of the change made by the editor. It can be viewed by hovering over the link.
Uses
Page histories are used for several purposes:
- Detecting vandalism: By comparing different versions of a page, users can identify and revert vandalism.
- Attribution: Page histories allow users to see who contributed what to a page, fulfilling the GNU Free Documentation License's requirement for attribution.
- Resolving disputes: By showing exactly what changes were made and when, page histories can help resolve disputes about a page's content.
