Alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiothiophenone

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiothiophenone (α-PVT) is a synthetic stimulant of the cathinone class that has been sold online as a designer drug. It is a analogue of alpha-PVP where the phenyl ring has been replaced by thiophene.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiothiophenone is a synthetic cathinone. Cathinones are a sub-category of amphetamines, sharing the core amphetamine structure of a phenyl ring bound to an amino (NH2) group through an ethyl chain with an additional methyl substitution at Rα. They are also known as the β-keto (double-bonded oxygen to the β-carbon) analogues of amphetamines.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

The pharmacology of α-PVT is not known in detail, but it is likely to act by increasing levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain. It may have similar effects to other stimulant drugs such as increased alertness, euphoria, increased speech and creativity, and increased physical activity.

Legality[edit | edit source]

α-PVT is illegal in many countries because of its potential for abuse and addiction. It is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, a Class B drug in the United Kingdom, and a Schedule II controlled substance in Canada.

Health Risks[edit | edit source]

The health risks of α-PVT are not fully known due to lack of human studies. However, it is known that synthetic cathinones can have harmful effects such as increased heart rate, high blood pressure, vasoconstriction, and in severe cases, heart attack. Other potential effects include anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior.
