French catheter scale chart

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

French catheter scale chart is a system used to measure the size of a catheter. It is based on the diameter of the catheter. Each French unit (Fr) is equivalent to 0.33 millimeters (mm).

Overview[edit | edit source]

The French catheter scale or French units is commonly used in medicine to measure the size of catheters, endotracheal tubes, and other cylindrical medical instruments. The scale is named after a Frenchman named Joseph-Frédéric-Benoît Charrière, a 19th-century Parisian producer of surgical instruments, who defined the diameter of a catheter in terms of French size.

Calculation[edit | edit source]

The diameter of a catheter in millimeters can be calculated by taking the French size and dividing by 3. For example, a catheter that is 9 Fr has a diameter of 3 mm.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The French catheter scale is used in a variety of medical procedures, including urinary catheterization, central venous catheterization, and endotracheal intubation. It is also used in the sizing of stents, nephrostomy tubes, and drainage catheters.
