Mechanical ventilation is a method to mechanically assist or replace spontaneous breathing. This article focuses on the various modes of mechanical ventilation and their applications in the medical field.

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Mechanical ventilation is primarily used in intensive care medicine and emergency medicine, but is also utilized in anesthesia and for respiratory therapy. The main types of mechanical ventilation include positive pressure ventilation, negative pressure ventilation, and high-frequency ventilation.

Positive Pressure Ventilation[edit | edit source]

Positive pressure ventilation is a mode of mechanical ventilation in which air is pushed into the patient's lungs. This mode is commonly used in both hospital and pre-hospital settings.

Types of Positive Pressure Ventilation[edit | edit source]

  • Volume-cycled ventilation: The ventilator delivers a set tidal volume with each breath, regardless of the patient's lung compliance or airway resistance.
  • Pressure-cycled ventilation: The ventilator delivers a breath until a preset pressure is reached.
  • Time-cycled ventilation: The ventilator delivers a breath for a preset amount of time.

Negative Pressure Ventilation[edit | edit source]

Negative pressure ventilation is a mode of mechanical ventilation that uses negative pressure to expand the lungs and draw in air. This mode is less commonly used, but can be found in certain specialized situations.

High-Frequency Ventilation[edit | edit source]

High-frequency ventilation is a type of mechanical ventilation that delivers small amounts of gas at a high rate, typically greater than 150 breaths per minute. This mode is often used in neonatal intensive care units.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

The modes of mechanical ventilation are critical tools in the management of patients with respiratory failure. Understanding these modes and their applications can greatly enhance patient care.
