Profunda Brachii Artery

The profunda brachii artery and its branches.

The Profunda Brachii Artery (Deep Artery of the Arm) is a large vessel that provides blood supply to the arm. It is a branch of the brachial artery and runs with the radial nerve through the radial groove of the humerus.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The profunda brachii artery originates from the brachial artery in the upper arm. It travels posteriorly, passing between the medial and lateral heads of the triceps brachii muscle. It then descends in the radial groove, supplying the triceps brachii and the deltoid muscle with blood.

Branches[edit | edit source]

The profunda brachii artery gives off several branches, including the middle collateral artery and the radial collateral artery. These arteries contribute to the anastomosis around the elbow joint.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its location, the profunda brachii artery can be injured in fractures of the humerus, potentially leading to significant bleeding. It may also be involved in conditions such as peripheral artery disease.
