Ramus parasympathica ganglii ciliaris
The ramus parasympathicus ganglii ciliaris is a component of the autonomic nervous system that provides parasympathetic innervation to the eye. It is associated with the ciliary ganglion, which is a small parasympathetic ganglion located in the orbit.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The ramus parasympathicus ganglii ciliaris originates from the Edinger-Westphal nucleus, which is part of the oculomotor nerve (cranial nerve III). The preganglionic parasympathetic fibers travel with the oculomotor nerve and synapse in the ciliary ganglion.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the ramus parasympathicus ganglii ciliaris is to control the pupil and the lens of the eye. The postganglionic fibers from the ciliary ganglion innervate the sphincter pupillae muscle, which constricts the pupil, and the ciliary muscle, which adjusts the lens for accommodation.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the ramus parasympathicus ganglii ciliaris can result in pupil dilation (mydriasis) and loss of accommodation, leading to blurred vision. This can occur due to lesions affecting the oculomotor nerve or the ciliary ganglion.
