BMJ (formerly the British Medical Journal) is a United Kingdom-based, peer-reviewed medical journal, published by the BMJ Publishing Group. The company was established in 1840 and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Medical Association (BMA) since 1853.

BMJ was originally called the Provincial Medical and Surgical Journal and it was first published in 1840. The journal became the British Medical Journal in 1857 and was renamed BMJ in 1988.
