Durion
Durion is a fictional character from the J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, specifically mentioned in The History of Middle-earth series. Durion is a Númenórean and a member of the Faithful, a group of Númenóreans who remained loyal to the Valar and friendly to the Elves.
Background[edit | edit source]
Durion lived during the later years of Númenor, a time marked by increasing tension between the Faithful and the King's Men, who opposed the Valar and sought power and immortality. The Faithful, also known as the Elendili, were led by Elendil and his sons, Isildur and Anárion.
Role in the Legendarium[edit | edit source]
Durion's specific actions and contributions are not extensively detailed in the primary texts but are referenced in the context of the broader narrative of Númenor's downfall and the subsequent establishment of the Realms in Exile in Middle-earth.
Númenor[edit | edit source]
Númenor was a large island located in the Great Sea, given to the Edain by the Valar as a reward for their help in the defeat of Morgoth in the First Age. The island was known for its advanced civilization and long-lived inhabitants. However, over time, the Númenóreans became increasingly envious of the immortality of the Elves and sought to gain it for themselves, leading to their eventual downfall.
The Faithful[edit | edit source]
The Faithful were a minority group among the Númenóreans who remained loyal to the Valar and maintained friendly relations with the Elves. They were persecuted by the King's Men, who had turned against the Valar and sought to dominate Middle-earth.
Downfall of Númenor[edit | edit source]
The downfall of Númenor, also known as the Akallabêth, was a cataclysmic event caused by the hubris of the Númenóreans. Under the influence of Sauron, the last king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn, attempted to invade the Undying Lands, leading to the island's destruction by the Valar.
Aftermath and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After the downfall of Númenor, the Faithful, led by Elendil and his sons, established the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth. These realms played a crucial role in the events of the Second Age and the Third Age, including the War of the Last Alliance and the War of the Ring.
