Sphenopetrosal fissure

(Redirected from Fissura sphenopetrosa)

Sphenopetrosal fissure is a term used in anatomy to describe a specific structure in the human skull. It is a gap or fissure located between the sphenoid bone and the petrous part of the temporal bone.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "sphenopetrosal fissure" is derived from the Greek words "sphen", meaning wedge, and "petros", meaning rock. The term "fissure" comes from the Latin "fissura", meaning a cleft or split.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The sphenopetrosal fissure is located in the middle cranial fossa, a depression in the floor of the cranial cavity. It is situated between the sphenoid bone, a butterfly-shaped bone at the base of the skull, and the petrous part of the temporal bone, a pyramid-shaped bone located at the sides and base of the skull.

The sphenopetrosal fissure is one of several fissures in the skull that allow for the passage of nerves, blood vessels, and other structures. It is particularly important for the passage of the greater petrosal nerve, a branch of the facial nerve that carries parasympathetic fibers to the lacrimal gland and to the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and palate.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its location and the structures that pass through it, the sphenopetrosal fissure can be involved in various medical conditions. For example, inflammation or infection in the middle cranial fossa can spread to the sphenopetrosal fissure, potentially affecting the structures that pass through it. Similarly, trauma to the skull can result in damage to the sphenopetrosal fissure, which can have serious consequences due to the important structures that pass through this fissure.
