Guide on navigating MediaWiki

Template:Help page

Help:Navigation is a guide designed to assist users in navigating through a MediaWiki-based website. Effective navigation is crucial for finding information quickly and efficiently. This guide covers the various tools and features available to users for navigating a MediaWiki site.

Navigation Elements[edit | edit source]

MediaWiki provides several navigation elements to help users find their way around the site:

Sidebar[edit | edit source]

The sidebar is located on the left side of the screen and contains links to important pages such as the Main Page, Recent changes, and Random page. It can be customized by site administrators to include additional links relevant to the specific wiki.

Search Box[edit | edit source]

The search box is typically located at the top right corner of the page. Users can type keywords into the search box to find articles related to their query. The search function supports both simple keyword searches and more advanced search options.

Namespaces[edit | edit source]

Namespaces are a way to organize content within a MediaWiki site. Common namespaces include:

Tabs[edit | edit source]

At the top of each page, there are several tabs that provide different functions:

  • Read: View the content of the page.
  • Edit: Edit the page (if you have the necessary permissions).
  • View history: View the edit history of the page.
  • Talk: Access the discussion page associated with the article.

Breadcrumbs[edit | edit source]

Breadcrumbs are a navigational aid that shows the path taken to reach the current page. They are particularly useful for users to backtrack to previous pages.

Categories[edit | edit source]

Categories are used to group related pages together. At the bottom of each page, you will find links to categories that the page belongs to. Clicking on a category link will take you to a list of all pages within that category.
