Revascularisation
Revascularisation is a medical procedure that restores blood flow to a body part or organ that has suffered from a lack of blood supply due to a blocked or damaged blood vessel. This can be achieved through various methods, including angioplasty, bypass surgery, and endarterectomy.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Revascularisation is typically indicated for conditions that involve impaired blood flow, such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease. It may also be used in the treatment of myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke.
Procedures[edit | edit source]
Angioplasty[edit | edit source]
Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of a balloon catheter to widen a narrowed or blocked blood vessel. This can be done with or without the placement of a stent, a small mesh tube that is used to keep the artery open.
Bypass Surgery[edit | edit source]
Bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), involves grafting a blood vessel from another part of the body to bypass a blocked artery and restore blood flow to the heart. This is typically done in cases where multiple arteries are blocked or the blockage is located in a critical area.
Endarterectomy[edit | edit source]
Endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of plaque from the inner lining of an artery. This is typically done in cases where the blockage is causing significant symptoms or is located in a critical area.
Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]
As with any medical procedure, revascularisation carries certain risks and potential complications. These may include bleeding, infection, damage to the blood vessels, heart attack, stroke, and death. The specific risks and complications will depend on the individual patient's health status and the specific procedure being performed.
