Inflammatory arthritis
Inflammatory arthritis is a group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the joints and often other tissues. These include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and lupus.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Inflammatory arthritis is characterized by damaging inflammation that does not occur as a normal reaction to injury or infection. This type of inflammation is unhelpful and instead causes damage in the affected joints, resulting in pain, stiffness and swelling.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of inflammatory arthritis is not known. However, genetic and environmental factors are believed to play a role. The inflammation in inflammatory arthritis is related to an overactive immune response.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis is based on the symptoms, physical examination, and medical history of the patient. Blood tests and imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound or MRI may also be used.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for inflammatory arthritis aims to reduce inflammation and pain, prevent joint damage, and maximize joint function and quality of life. Treatments include medications, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery.
