The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is a part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that is tasked with improving the safety and quality of the American healthcare system. AHRQ develops the knowledge, tools, and data needed to improve the healthcare system and help Americans, healthcare professionals, and policymakers make informed health decisions.

The AHRQ was originally established as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) in 1989. It was created to enhance the quality, appropriateness, and effectiveness of healthcare services and access to such services. In 1999, the agency was reauthorized and renamed as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
