Andrew jackson

Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was an American soldier and statesman who served as the seventh President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. Before being elected to the presidency, Jackson gained fame as a general in the United States Army and served in both houses of the U.S. Congress.

Early Life

Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in the Waxhaws region of the Carolinas. His parents were Scots-Irish colonists Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson. He was the youngest of the Jacksons' three sons. His exact birth location is uncertain because he was born about the time his mother was making a difficult trip home from burying Jackson's father.

Military Career

Jackson's military career began in the American Revolutionary War. He joined the local militia, a group of citizen-soldiers, at age thirteen. Jackson was captured by the British, making him the only President to have been a prisoner of war. He later became a lawyer, and in 1791 he was appointed U.S. attorney for the western district of North Carolina.

Presidency

Jackson's presidency was marked by four major issues: The Second Bank of the United States, the Tariff of 1828, the Indian Removal Act, and the Nullification Crisis. His aggressive and personalized approach to government earned him the nickname "King Andrew," but his actions during his presidency greatly expanded the power of the presidency.

Legacy

Jackson's legacy is a mixed one. He is regarded as having been a strong president who used his office to promote democracy, but he is also remembered for his treatment of Native Americans during the Trail of Tears.
