The term, which derives from the Italian word for "air" (a tune), was originally used to refer to any expressive melody, usually, but not always, performed by a singer.

The aria evolved in the early 17th century during the Baroque period. Early examples can be found in the works of Claudio Monteverdi and Giulio Caccini. Aria forms vary, but the most common structure is the da capo aria, which is in ternary form (ABA). In this form, the first section (A) is followed by a contrasting section (B), and then the first section is repeated with embellishments.
