Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase students' learning and development. Assessment can be categorized into different types, including formative assessment, summative assessment, diagnostic assessment, and benchmark assessment.

Formative assessment is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures employed by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment. Examples include quizzes, discussions, and observations.

Benchmark assessment is used to measure students' progress toward meeting standards and learning goals. These assessments are typically administered at regular intervals throughout the school year.
