Attending Physician Statement

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Attending Physician Statement (APS) is a document that is often required by insurance companies during the underwriting process of an individual's application for insurance coverage. The APS is a report by a physician, hospital or medical facility who has treated, or who is currently treating, a person seeking insurance.

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The primary purpose of an Attending Physician Statement is to provide a comprehensive medical history of the applicant to the insurance company. This information is used to assess the risk associated with providing insurance coverage to the individual. The APS provides detailed information about an individual's past and present health conditions, treatments received, and the prognosis of any existing conditions.

Content[edit | edit source]

An APS typically includes the following information:

  • Personal identification details of the patient
  • Detailed medical history
  • Current medical conditions
  • Past and present treatments and their outcomes
  • Any prescribed medications
  • Results of any medical tests
  • The physician's prognosis

Process[edit | edit source]

The process of obtaining an APS begins when an insurance company requests the document during the underwriting process. The attending physician then completes the statement, providing detailed information about the individual's health. The completed APS is then sent back to the insurance company for review.

Importance[edit | edit source]

The APS is a crucial document in the underwriting process as it provides a detailed account of an individual's health. This information is used by the insurance company to determine the risk of insuring the individual and to set the premium for the insurance policy. A person with a serious health condition, for example, might be considered a high-risk individual and therefore be required to pay a higher premium.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

While the APS is a valuable tool for insurance companies, it is not without its limitations. The accuracy of the information provided in the APS depends on the honesty of the individual and the thoroughness of the attending physician. Furthermore, the APS only provides information about the individual's health up to the point when the statement was completed. Any changes in the individual's health after the APS is completed will not be reflected in the document.
