Amlodipine/valsartan is a combination medication used in the management of hypertension. It combines two antihypertensive agents: amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, and valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. This combination is used to improve blood pressure control in patients who may not be adequately controlled on monotherapy.

Amlodipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, leading to vasodilation and a reduction in blood pressure. Amlodipine is particularly effective in reducing peripheral vascular resistance.
Valsartan[edit | edit source]
Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively inhibits the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor. This action prevents the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Amlodipine/valsartan is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in patients who are not adequately controlled with either amlodipine or valsartan alone. It may also be used as initial therapy in patients who are likely to need multiple drugs to achieve their blood pressure goals.
Dosage and Administration[edit | edit source]
The dosage of amlodipine/valsartan is individualized based on the patient's current treatment regimen and blood pressure goals. It is typically administered once daily, with or without food. The combination is available in various strengths to accommodate different dosing requirements.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of amlodipine/valsartan include dizziness, headache, and peripheral edema. Less common but more serious side effects may include hypotension, renal impairment, and hyperkalemia. Patients should be monitored for these adverse effects, especially during the initiation of therapy.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
Amlodipine/valsartan is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to either component. It should not be used in patients with severe hepatic impairment or in those with bilateral renal artery stenosis. Caution is advised in patients with heart failure or impaired renal function.
Drug Interactions[edit | edit source]
Amlodipine/valsartan may interact with other antihypertensive agents, leading to an additive effect on blood pressure reduction. It may also interact with drugs that affect renal function or potassium levels, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and potassium-sparing diuretics.
