Corning Incorporated

Corning Incorporated is an American multinational technology company that specializes in specialty glass, ceramics, and related materials and technologies including advanced optics, primarily for industrial and scientific applications. The company was known as Corning Glass Works until 1989.

Corning Incorporated was established in 1851 in Corning, New York by Amory Houghton, in nearby Somerville, Massachusetts. It was originally known as the Bay State Glass Co. and changed its name to Corning Glass Works in 1875. The company has a long history of innovations in materials science, including the development of Pyrex and Gorilla Glass.

Products and Services[edit | edit source]

Corning's products include glass substrates for LCD televisions, computer monitors, and laptops; ceramic substrates and filters for mobile emission control systems; optical fiber, cable, hardware & equipment for telecommunications networks; optical biosensors for drug discovery; and other advanced optics and specialty glass solutions for a number of industries including semiconductor, aerospace, defense, astronomy and metrology.

Corning Incorporated has a strong focus on R&D, with historical breakthroughs including the invention of low-loss optical fiber and the development of fusion draw, a process to manufacture high-quality flat glass.
