Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol
Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as Delta-8-THC, Δ8-THC, and sometimes simply D8) is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant. It is an isomer of Delta-9-THC, the compound commonly known as THC.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Delta-8-THC is a form of THC that is structurally different from the more commonly known Delta-9-THC. The "delta" part of the name refers to the double bond, which can be located in different places on the molecule in different types of THC. In Delta-8-THC, the double bond is on the 8th carbon chain, while in Delta-9-THC, it is on the 9th.
Effects[edit | edit source]
Delta-8-THC is less potent than Delta-9-THC. It has been reported to have roughly two-thirds the potency of Delta-9. However, it still has psychoactive effects and is considered to be intoxicating.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Delta-8-THC varies by country and by state in the United States. It is a controlled substance in some jurisdictions, but not in others.
Medical Use[edit | edit source]
There is ongoing research into the potential medical uses of Delta-8-THC. Some studies have suggested that it may have benefits in treating a variety of conditions, including chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and chronic pain.
