Emergency Services

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Emergency Services are the public organizations that respond to and deal with emergencies when they occur, especially those that require an urgent response.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Emergency Services are organized with the aim of providing rapid response services to prevent the occurrence of life-threatening situations. They are typically provided by three main public services: police, fire department, and medical services. However, they can also be provided by other services such as emergency management, civil defense, emergency communication, emergency medical services, lifeguard, search and rescue, and emergency road service.

Police[edit | edit source]

The police are a constituted body of persons empowered by a state, with the aim to enforce the law, to ensure the safety, health and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder. Their lawful powers include arrest and the use of force legitimized by the state via the monopoly on violence.

Fire Department[edit | edit source]

The fire department (also known as a fire brigade or fire service), is a public or private organization that provides predominantly emergency firefighting services for a specific geographic area. Fire departments are most commonly a public sector organization that operate within a municipality, county, state, nation, or special district.

Medical Services[edit | edit source]

Medical services, also known as ambulance services or paramedic services, are emergency services which treat illnesses and injuries that require an urgent medical response, providing out-of-hospital treatment and transport to definitive care. They may also be known as a first aid squad, FAST squad, emergency squad, ambulance squad, ambulance corps, life squad or by other initialisms such as EMAS or EMARS.
