Emotion regulation refers to the processes by which individuals influence which emotions they feel, when they feel them, and how they experience and express these emotions. Emotion regulation can be automatic or controlled, conscious or unconscious, and may have effects at one or more points in the emotion producing process.

  • Cognitive change: Modifying one's interpretation or appraisal of a situation to alter its emotional significance, often through reappraisal.

Response-focused strategies occur after the emotion has been fully generated and are aimed at influencing the experience or expression of the emotion. These include:

  • Suppression: Inhibiting the outward signs of inner feelings.
  • Expression: Enhancing or maintaining the expression of felt emotions.

The development of emotion regulation is influenced by both biological factors and environmental factors, such as early interactions with caregivers. Social norms and cultural contexts also play a crucial role in shaping how individuals regulate their emotions.
