Esox lucius
Esox lucius, commonly known as the Northern Pike, is a species of carnivorous fish of the genus Esox (the pikes). They are native to North America and Eurasia, and are known for their elongated bodies and sharp teeth.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Northern Pike is a large fish, with adults typically reaching lengths of 70–120 cm (28–47 in) and weights of 3.5–15 kg (7.7–33.1 lb). They have a distinctive appearance, with a long, slender body, a flat, duckbill-like snout, and sharp, pointed teeth. Their coloration is typically greenish, with lighter, yellowish spots.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Northern Pikes are found in a wide range of freshwater habitats, including lakes, rivers, and marshes. They prefer cool, clear waters with abundant vegetation, which provides cover for hunting. They are tolerant of a wide range of water temperatures, but prefer cooler waters.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Northern Pikes are solitary and highly territorial fish. They are ambush predators, lying in wait for prey to come within striking distance. Their diet consists mainly of fish, but they will also eat amphibians, birds, and small mammals.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
The breeding season for Northern Pikes typically occurs in the spring, when water temperatures reach 9–10 °C (48–50 °F). Females lay thousands of eggs, which are fertilized by males. The eggs are adhesive and stick to vegetation. The young, known as fry, hatch after 1–2 weeks.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
The Northern Pike is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction. However, it is vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution, and overfishing can also be a problem in some areas.
Cultural significance[edit | edit source]
The Northern Pike is a popular game fish, prized for its size and fighting spirit. It is also eaten in many parts of its range, although its flesh is known to contain small, Y-shaped bones.
