Femto-

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Femto-[edit | edit source]

Femto- is a unit prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of 10^-15 or 0.000000000000001. It is used in the fields of physics, chemistry, and engineering to measure extremely small quantities. The prefix is derived from the Danish word "femten", which means fifteen.

Usage in Medicine[edit | edit source]

In the field of medicine, femto- is often used in the context of femtosecond laser technology. This technology is used in a variety of medical procedures, including cataract surgery and LASIK, to make precise, microscopic cuts in tissue.

Femtosecond Laser[edit | edit source]

A femtosecond laser is a laser that emits optical pulses with a duration between a few femtoseconds and hundreds of femtoseconds. In medicine, these lasers are used to perform precise surgical procedures, such as cutting, coagulating, and ablating tissue.

Cataract Surgery[edit | edit source]

In cataract surgery, a femtosecond laser can be used to create the initial incision in the cornea, as well as to fragment the cataractous lens. This can improve the precision and safety of the procedure.

LASIK[edit | edit source]

In LASIK surgery, a femtosecond laser is used to create a thin flap in the cornea. The surgeon then lifts the flap to reshape the underlying cornea with an excimer laser.
