Flossing is a method of oral hygiene that involves the use of a thin filament, commonly referred to as dental floss, to remove food and dental plaque from between the teeth where a toothbrush is unable to reach. Regular flossing is essential for maintaining healthy gums and preventing periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.

1. Cutting off about 18 inches of floss and winding most of it around one of your middle fingers, with the rest wound around the same finger of the opposite hand to take up the used floss. 2. Holding the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it gently up-and-down between your teeth. 3. Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gumline. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue. 4. Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
