Variable area flowmeters, also known as rotameters, consist of a tapered tube and a float. The fluid flow raises the float in the tube, and the height of the float is proportional to the flow rate. These are commonly used for measuring gas flow rates in medical applications.
2. Differential Pressure Flowmeters[edit | edit source]
These flowmeters measure the pressure drop across a constriction in the flow path. The most common type is the orifice plate flowmeter. They are used in applications where precise flow measurement is critical.
3. Thermal Mass Flowmeters[edit | edit source]
Thermal mass flowmeters measure the flow rate based on the heat transfer from a heated element to the fluid. They are particularly useful for measuring low flow rates of gases.
4. Ultrasonic Flowmeters[edit | edit source]
Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to measure the velocity of a fluid. They are non-invasive and can be used for both gases and liquids.

Flowmeters are integral to several medical devices and procedures:
- Ventilators: Flowmeters ensure the correct volume and flow rate of air and oxygen are delivered to patients.
- Anesthesia Machines: Accurate flow measurement is critical for delivering the correct mixture of anesthetic gases.
- Oxygen Therapy: Flowmeters regulate the flow of oxygen to patients requiring supplemental oxygen.

Regular calibration and maintenance of flowmeters are essential to ensure their accuracy and reliability. Calibration involves comparing the flowmeter's readings with a standard reference and adjusting as necessary. Maintenance may include cleaning, checking for leaks, and replacing worn parts.
