Fuchsin, also known as rosaniline hydrochloride, is a magenta dye that is widely used in histology and bacteriology for staining purposes. It is a member of the triphenylmethane dyes and is known for its vibrant color and ability to bind to biological tissues.

Fuchsin is primarily used in the field of microbiology and histology for staining purposes. It is a key component of the Ziehl-Neelsen stain, which is used to identify acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The dye binds to the mycolic acids in the bacterial cell wall, allowing for the visualization of these organisms under a microscope.

In histology, fuchsin is used in the Van Gieson stain, which is employed to differentiate between collagen and muscle fibers in tissue sections. The dye stains collagen fibers red, providing a contrast against the yellow-stained muscle fibers.
