Julius Kühn-Institut

Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI), named after Julius Kühn, is a German federal research institution subordinated to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. It is responsible for biological safety in agriculture, the conservation of biodiversity, and the assessment of the safety of genetically modified organisms in agriculture.

The Julius Kühn-Institut was founded in 1876 by Julius Kühn as the "Institute for Phytopathology and Applied Botany". It was renamed in 1949 as the "Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry" and in 2008, it was renamed again as the "Julius Kühn-Institut".

Structure[edit | edit source]

The Julius Kühn-Institut is divided into four departments: Plant Protection Products, Plant Health, National and International Affairs and Support, and Genetics and Biodiversity. Each department is further divided into institutes and work groups.

Research[edit | edit source]

The Julius Kühn-Institut conducts research in the fields of plant protection, plant health, genetic resources, and biodiversity. It also provides scientific advice to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other federal ministries, and it represents Germany in international committees and working groups.
