Allele frequency, also known as gene frequency, is a fundamental concept in genetics and population genetics. It refers to how common an allele is in a population. It is expressed as a proportion or percentage of all copies of a gene in a given population that are of a particular allele type. The allele frequency of a specific allele is calculated by dividing the number of copies of that allele by the total number of copies of all alleles at the same locus in the population.
